09/09/06 - U11 Match Report - Bourn Tournament 09 Sept
The first football of the new season got underway on a sunny September morning in Bourn. A full team turned out with David and Cameron sharing the goalkeeping responsibilities this week.
There were 4 teams involved this week - ourselves, Bourn Sports, Bourn, and Melbourn. Our first game was a difficult one against Bourn Sports. We started off very brightly passing the ball niceley around midfield. Despite creating a few chances and having a lot of shots on goal we couldn't get through the Bourn Sports defence and had to settle for a 0-0 draw.
The second game was against Melbourn. Alfie started this game and looked like he had been practising over the summer - he was everywhere in this game. Again we created a lot of chances and George managed to wriggle through the defence to open the scoring for Graveley. It took him 20 games to score his first goal last season but he scored on the first day this season. The combinations of George, Daniel and Alfie were very strong at the back and whenever Melbourn did create chances, Cameron was in form stopping everything. Further forward, the midfield and attack of Joe, Ben R, Ian, David and Ben M were moving well and involving each other in the game. The second half was mainly one way traffic with Graveley pushing for a second goal. Shots were firing in from all angles before Joe managed to get himself in the right place at the right time to tuck away the second goal.
The third game was the decider. We needed to win if we were to win the tournament. It was a tough game and although we looked slightly on top it was Bourn who took the lead after a mix-up in our defence left their striker unmarked. David did his best to block the shot but it rebounded off the striker and rolled into the net. We kept our heads up though and Ian sent Ben M through on a run for Ben to tuck the ball past the keeper and get the scores level again almost immediately. In the second half it looked like we would never score - everyone pushed up to try and get the winner but the Bourn keeper pulled off some very good saves. At the other end, Bourn could have scored but David kept us in the match with one fine save. Finally, with 2 minutes to go, good work by Joe, Ben R and George got the ball through to Ben M in front of goal. Ben fired it into the roof of the net for the winner.
And so we start the new season with a tournament victory. Medals were presented by Alison Mowbray who won a silver medal at the Athens Olympics for rowing (quad skulls). And man of the match went to Alfie - he put in some great performances today.
