2007/2008 - Under 10s Match Reports
After a very late night watching the England U21s, it was the turn of the Graveley U10s to play, this time at home to Godmanchester B. Joe was elected captain today.
The game started very well for us, with Jon and Grace having a couple of early chances. However, Godmanchester gradually took control of the game and created some scrambled chances inside our penalty area. It wasn't our best half of football, and it wasn't much of a surprise when Godmanchester took the lead. The ball rolled out from a corner to their midfielder who rocketed a shot against the bar (the television replays showed that Lewis might have got a slight touch), and then the ball bounced back off Lewis' back and into the goal.
We picked ourselves up at half-time and we all agreed that we could play better in the second half. And that's what we did. We were a different team. Starting at the back, Matt and Seb started to defend the middle better and stopped their players from getting close to goal. Jamie, Grace, Joe and Jon closed down the players with the ball much more quickly which meant they didn't have time to line up any shots, and Jordan and James ran more directly up front, again putting their defenders under some pressure. And in goal, Lewis saved what shots came his way and his kicking was excellent today.
Our goal was a bit scrappy but well deserved - Jamie hitting a shot that somehow crept past the keeper and into the net, with Jordan confusing the keeper. We had a few more chances after that - Jon, Jamie and Grace all going close.
A draw was a fair result. Although we were the better team in the second half, Godmanchester were the better team in the first half. Man of the match today went to Lewis for some great saves and for keeping us in the game during the first half.
