2007/2008 - Under 10s Match Reports
Our unbelievable run had to come to an end one day and this was the day - after almost one and a half seasons unbeaten in the league (I had to put that in to quieten the unrest amongst the supporters who are calling for the manager's head!).
A very cold day meant that we were wishing we were still in bed - but enough about the parents, the players were looking forward to it. Lewis was captain today and was quickly into action, making one smart save to deny St Ives and rushing out to clear when the St Ives player was through.
Matt was his usual rock at the back, with Seb playing really well today and finding time to venture forwards (and sometimes back). We created problems up front with James and Jordan having some good attempts on goal, Jordan hitting the post and James forcing a fantastic save from their keeper.
In midfield, we looked very good going forward at times, although probably didn't get enough shots in on goal. Jamie hit the crossbar from a short corner, Joe almost got a goal from a tight angle, Jon forced a fine save late on from their keeper, and Grace also almost managed a goal from just outside the area.
The first St Ives goal came as we were attacking. They broke quickly and so we had 1 against 3 at the back. They scored well, although our midfield will need to get back more quickly next time! We got back level again (it would be nice to score first soon!) with a fantastic shot by Seb high into the corner of the net (I think again following a short corner).
We had a lot of possession in the second half without ever creating lots of chances - James and Jon going closest with the keeper making some great saves. St Ives scored their second near the end as we couldn't clear the ball away from our goal.
As I say, all good things come to an end. Perhaps now that we have lost, we will regain our fluency and start playing our "total football" (for those old enough to remember the Dutch side of the 70s). Grace was the well-deserved "man" of the match this week - she never gave up and was always available for her teammates.
